Identification of Biofuel Producing Bacteria Through Temperature Resistance
09 Aug 2010: Biofuel generation requires bacteria that are temperature resistant and the search for those strains requires multiple bacterial clones to be monitored at high temperatures over long periods. This application note demonstrates the ability of the PowerWave™ XS Microplate Reader to perform absorbance measurements at high temperatures.

A Comparison of Multiple Microplate Formats for Use in the LANCE® and AlphaScreen® Assays
06 Aug 2010: This application note demonstrates white solid, clear and round bottom microplates are the optimal choices for both LANCE® and AlphaScreen Assays. White 384 and 1536 well microplates give the greatest assay window with minimal cross-talk. LANCE control beads and AlphaScreen Omnibeads are also shown to be useful tools for optimizing and validating microplate and instrument choices for experimental protocols.

Adhesive Micropatterns for HCS: a Case Study with Blebbistatin
29 Jun 2010: This poster demonstrates that drug effects can be detected and measured in the submicromolar range, when they are barely observable on regular cell culture supports. In addition, a significant difference between treated and untreated cells is detected with only 20 analyzed cells.

Human Oncostatin M is Functionally Equivalent to Mouse LIF in Supporting Mouse ES Cell Pluripotency & Germline Competency
21 Jun 2010: In this application note R&D Systems demonstrate human OSM is able to maintain ES cell pluripotency in a similar manner to mouse LIF, including long-term maintenance of pluripotency and the ability to differentiate in vitro, the ability to activate STAT3, and germline transmission competency. The study suggests that OSM may be an additional factor that plays a role in early embryonic development and that it may be used as an alternative to LIF in mouse ES cell culture.

Microplate-Based Endotoxin Testing in GLP/GMP Environments with the VersaMax™ Absorbance Microplate Reader and Pyrochrome® Assay
07 Jun 2010: This application note describes a typical set-up for a standard curve in the Pyrochrome® Assay. The Pyrochrome® Assay together with the VersaMax Microplate Reader offers a sensitive and specific method for detecting endotoxin contamination in the production process of the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Stem Cell-Derived Human Neurons in CNS Drug Discovery
07 Jun 2010: In this application note from Molecular Devices reproducible batches of human neurons are generated that will significantly improve and impact CNS drug discovery. The stem cell-derived neurons express all known markers typically associated with mature neurons and are functionally active. These neurons have been used in a recent screen to identify antagonists of a novel GPCR target implicated in schizophrenia.

Cytotoxicity in Cells: Easy Determination Using Lonza ViaLight Plus and ToxiLight BioAssays on the SpectraMax L Microplate Luminometer
07 Jun 2010: The Lonza ViaLight® Plus and ToxiLight® Bioluminescent Cytotoxicity Assays exploit the cell characteristics of ATP levels and adenylate kinase release respectively, as cytotoxicity measures and enable detection using bioluminescent methods. This application note demonstrates that the SpectraMax L Microplate Luminometer and SoftMax Pro Software from Molecular Devices combine well with both assays providing a fast and sensitive combination of technologies in the field of cell death.

Using EL406™ Combination Washer Dispenser to Semi-Automate an ELISA for Melamine
24 May 2010: Melamine is a nitrogen rich compound that has been used illegally as an additive that mimics protein in foods. This application note demonstrates the ability of the EL406 to automate the liquid handling tasks required to run the melamine ELISA kit from Abraxis. The melamine ELISA has the capability to detect melamine contamination in the parts per billion (PPB) ranges.

Turbidometric Growth Curve Measurements and Liquid Evaporation Studies with a Microplate Photometer
24 May 2010: The ability to monitor bacterial samples is important for food testing safety and analysis. This paper describes how a filter-based microplate photometer, Thermo Scientific Multiskan FC, can be used reliably and easily to measure turbidity of bacterial samples in antibiotic susceptibility studies. The growth curve measurements were performed on a 96-well microplate.

Non-Contact Acoustic Liquid Dispensing Systems: New Challenges in Automation and Implementation in the Work Flow
10 May 2010: Agilent Automation Solutions has published a technical poster that describes the integration of true non-contact acoustic liquid dispensing technology within an Agilent BioCel System enabling a new level of high throughput automation in a drug discovery environment. The poster describes the configuration of a fully automated compound management solution for screening and developmental assay plates.
