A Comparison of Multiple Microplate Formats for Use in the LANCE® and AlphaScreen® Assays
06 Aug 2010: This application note demonstrates white solid, clear and round bottom microplates are the optimal choices for both LANCE® and AlphaScreen Assays. White 384 and 1536 well microplates give the greatest assay window with minimal cross-talk. LANCE control beads and AlphaScreen Omnibeads are also shown to be useful tools for optimizing and validating microplate and instrument choices for experimental protocols.

Adhesive Micropatterns for HCS: a Case Study with Blebbistatin
29 Jun 2010: This poster demonstrates that drug effects can be detected and measured in the submicromolar range, when they are barely observable on regular cell culture supports. In addition, a significant difference between treated and untreated cells is detected with only 20 analyzed cells.

Human Oncostatin M is Functionally Equivalent to Mouse LIF in Supporting Mouse ES Cell Pluripotency & Germline Competency
21 Jun 2010: In this application note R&D Systems demonstrate human OSM is able to maintain ES cell pluripotency in a similar manner to mouse LIF, including long-term maintenance of pluripotency and the ability to differentiate in vitro, the ability to activate STAT3, and germline transmission competency. The study suggests that OSM may be an additional factor that plays a role in early embryonic development and that it may be used as an alternative to LIF in mouse ES cell culture.

Stem Cell-Derived Human Neurons in CNS Drug Discovery

The stem cell-derived neurons express all known markers typically associated with mature neurons and are functionally active. These neurons have been used in a recent screen to identify antagonists of a novel GPCR target implicated in schizophrenia.

This application note demonstrates the ability of the EL406 to automate the liquid handling tasks required to run the melamine ELISA kit from Abraxis. Turbidometric Growth Curve Measurements and Liquid Evaporation Studies with a Microplate Photometer
24 May 2010: The ability to monitor bacterial samples is important for food testing safety and analysis. This paper describes how a filter-based microplate photometer, Thermo Scientific Multiskan FC, can be used reliably and easily to measure turbidity of bacterial samples in antibiotic susceptibility studies. The growth curve measurements were performed on a 96-well microplate.
